“STUDIO: Australian Painters on the Nature of Creativity” is a book, DVD and exhibition project that showcases 61 of Australia’s most respected and important painters working in their studio environment.
The exhibition illustrates a broad cross-section artists from across Australia working in a variety of styles, captured in large photographic portraits in the individual artist’s working environment: whether it be an inner city loft, a kitchen table or the sandy earth of the Outback.
Emergent Designs worked closely with Lloyd on the project, which came to fruition with a book and exhibition launch at the National Portrait Gallery. For this show, we recommended cold laminating the prints, which were then mounted onto 10mm gataboard, which is lightweight, but extremely durable.
We framed the prints using Artframe in silver metal, which was not only economical and lightweight for transport, but protected the prints over the 7 years the show was touring through-out Australia.
The exhibition then spent the next 7 years touring 23 state and regional galleries and became the longest running exhibition in Australian history. By the end of its tour in 2014 it had been seen by over 130,000 visitors.
“During this time we had to make only one replacement print due to mishandling at a gallery”, Lloyd said, of the print finishing done by Emergent Designs. “The entire show is now stored and if shown again would look as good as it did when first shown.”
Lloyd also took advantage of our custom packing and hanging solutions. “I visited many of the exhibitions and received many compliments from curators on how easy the show was to hang and ship. The exhibition was packed in three very sturdy aluminium shipping containers with wheels that the prints slotted into. A fourth container for three 50” x 72” oversize prints was specially made by Emergent Designs from heavy duty cardboard for interstate shipping also.”
